Caterpillar genocide

So like I don't know if its a thing or not but lately every time i walk the dog there are like a million squished caterpillars on the path.  and it really makes me think of a lot of things... evolution, life and death, the migratory path of butterflies and how many generations it takes to make the journey to mexico (i think its like 4 or 5 - i learned about this on my BDay at the Butterfly Tent

and apparently like Monarch butterflies are in decline by 90%, are they going to be endangered? i can see why if everyone steps on the caterpillars.
